IMPORTANT NOTICE
Unprecedented levels of rainfall have affected the area of Cusco in Peru. There are number of tourist and locals that have become isolated in certain areas as Aguas Calientes next to Machu Picchu. The Peruvian Government has declared State of Emergency in the Cusco region and is taking urgent measures to evacuate the tourists affected. For the purpose, it has implemented an “aerial bridge” with 11 helicopters. Priority is being given to those persons in ill condition, elders over 60 years, infants, mothers and the rest of them. Up to now 27 January, The Embassy of Peru has not information regarding Australian citizens that may be affected or injured. Nonetheless, the Embassy of Peru suggests those interested in additional information to contact DFAT (02 - 62611111), Consular Operations.
Weather reports suggest the rains may continue in the coming days in Cusco and it would be advisable to refrain from making immediate plans to visit the area.
